Heart Like This was written by the brilliant Australian guitarist, performer and songwriter Daniel Champagne. It is performed as a Duet on his album The Gypsy Moon volume 1 and it was intended that he would perform Hannah’s version with her, however, unfortunately studio timing didn’t work out and so renowned Melbourne music scene identity, and Hannah’s cousin, Ben Gillespie stepped in to record the duet vocals in his place.
It is beautifully produced by Kasey Chambers who cleverly reinvented it as a piano based arrangement and features the Brandon Dodd on guitars, with Matt Nightingale and Kayne Butler making up the backline.
lyrics
By Daniel Champagne (Ben and Hannah Edits)
I guess the mornings good for leaving
I guess I’ll try to tell you why
I guess we lost ourselves believing that we could chase the sky
That we could chase the sky
See the shadows dance before us
Dya feel this love melt just like snow
Dya hear the black crow flyin, calling out the end
It’s got me waiting on the breeze like it's my only friend
You said the mornings good for leaving
You tried to tell me why
You said I'd lost myself dreaming while you went to say goodbye
Did you mean to say goodbye
I think your shirts still in the hallway
I think your songs still in my fist
A cry of shame has got me tied to the hall
And I stay here silent starring at the open door
And it goes like this if we never let it fall
And we'll always wish that we had of made a call
With a heart like this you can never have it all
Till it all comes back with a wrecking ball
Can't you feel the sky way falling down
I've tried to let you know
Can't you hear the highway calling now
I’ve got to let this go
Leaving’s left a thorn in every kiss
I could not feel before
I could never hold a heart like this
I'm lost starring at the open door
Trying to hold you is like trying to fire a pistol in the dark, I missed the mark and now you’re running from the world again
I can't control this and I won't retrace our steps back to the start, you shot the heart out of our love and now it’s all fair game
I want to know you but I don't know if I can play the part and cut you out after compromising from the birth to end and I want to show how this cold wind and the highway leave their mark, got me waiting on the breeze like it’s my only friend
And it goes like this if we never let it fall
And we'll always wish that we had of made a call
With a heart like this you can never have it all
Till it all comes back with a wrecking ball
